Find out how Kerry Kellett created the ultimate outdoor entertaining space with Trex® Transcend® Lineage Decking

What began in 2020 as a simple Instagram account to document her home transformation, has now turned into a design phenomenon. Kerry Kellett, the creative force behind KLK Interiors, has captivated an audience of over one million followers with her serene neutral palette and signature blend of timeless period charm and modern sophistication. Her distinctive aesthetic and authentic, DIY approach to interior styling continue to inspire design and interiors lovers around the world.

This year, she took on a new challenge: creating the ultimate outdoor entertaining space in the family garden. Kerry told us:

When our two children outgrew the playground we had previously built, we knew it was time for a change and decided now was the right time to completely overhaul the 13,000sqft space.

I wanted to bring my interior design style outside, keeping the neutral tones through the furniture and the decking but bringing more of a Moroccan style in too, through the use of tiles, terracotta pots and olive trees.

THE FLOOR PLAN

Kerry and Richard intended to complete all the work themselves, including the decking – so knew they had to start with a clear plan and do their research.

Kerry explained:

“We did a lot of research on Pinterest and came up with a few ideas. The garden contour lent itself to being on three tiers, and I wanted to create an outdoor space that we could use as a family, but also to entertain friends, so we planned out the outdoor entertaining space into five designated zones:

  1. Kitchen
  2. Lounge and fireplace
  3. Garden snug and sofa space
  4. Hot tub
  5. Games room

FROM FOUNDATION TO FINISH

Kerry continued:

“We needed decking that would tie the whole space together but also something that would last and maintain all year round was key.”

After looking at both composite and timber style options, Kerry decided to look into composite decking for its low-maintenance and lifespan and was highly recommended Trex® by their local timber merchant, Myers Building & Timber Supplies, which offers up to a 50-Year Limited Residential Warranty.

All five zones are seamlessly unified with Trex composite decking, creating one expansive, elegant space for entertaining.

“We used Trex® Transcend® Lineage composite decking in the shade Biscayne (a best-seller for 2025 which incorporates Trex’s heat-mitigating* SunComfortable™ Technology). It’s a light coastal brown that blends perfectly with the silver tones of the larch on the Garden Room. I was keen to use a low-maintenance product that could withstand parties, children and animals – it’s stain and fade-resistant**, and super easy to clean with just soap and water***.

“We laid the decking ourselves and it’s held up so well – we found the whole process really simple compared to previous projects and much easier to work with than traditional timber. When I first handled the Trex boards, I was impressed by their solid, heavyweight quality compared to lighter, hollow composites. They were a bit heavy to carry, but I could immediately tell it was a durable, long-lasting product.”

Using a circular saw and chop saw, Kerry and Richard achieved precise cuts and clean picture-frame edges. The hidden fastener system simplified installation, creating seamless lines without drilling through the boards. Trex also provides lots of resources for DIY deck building, including planning, 3D design software, product profiles and information on materials, codes and permits so you can make your garden dreams a reality.

Since the addition of the decking and outdoor entertaining space, the family has found themselves spending much more time outside. The new setup has given the home cook a welcome break from the indoor kitchen, opening the door to more relaxed, joyful cooking outdoors. Grilling, roasting and experimenting with flavours have become a favourite hobby.

The outdoor area has transformed the way the family lives at home. They now spend more time together outside, sharing meals, entertaining friends and enjoying the simple pleasure of being at home. Their favourite moments are those quiet evenings on the deck, with food sizzling on the grill, laughter in the air and everyone gathered together.

The design element that I would say I'm most proud of is the tree. We really wanted to incorporate the tree into the decking, as it was part of the house when we bought it, and we didn't want to chop it down. So, creating a ‘picture frame’ around the tree and making sure it looks just like the rest of the decking – I was quite proud of the finish in the end.

We’re really proud of the entire space, it's beyond my expectations of what I thought it would turn out to be. I love it, it’s finished the garden and given us an outdoor entertaining space to enjoy. We've had more parties this year than we've ever had before.

“My advice for anyone about to embark on a similar garden transformation project would be:

  • Don’t rush it – remember that everything takes longer than you think, start with a clear plan and don’t get ahead of yourself; just take it section by section and take your time
  • If you’re creating a garden suitable for a family, make sure to incorporate both child-friendly and adult-friendly spaces
  • Create a realistic schedule – factor in time to sit, reflect and plan

*Trex SunComfortable technology stays cooler than Trex’s original boards, but like all decking, it will get hot in direct sun on hot days, especially darker colors. Care should be taken to avoid extended contact between exposed skin and the deck surface, especially with young children and those with special needs.
