Celebrate Recycling On America Recycles Day

Tomorrow is America Recycles Day – the only nationally recognized day dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in America - and Trex applauds this effort sponsored by Keep America Beautiful.

While thousands across the country are expected to participate in local events celebrating and learning about recycling in their communities, Trex aligns itself with this program by kicking off our annual Plastic Film Recycling Challenge at the same time. This challenge pits hundreds of schools across the nation and Canada against each other in a race to see who can recycle the most plastic film. This challenge ends April 15. Winning schools receive a bench made from Trex decking.

These school children recycle plastic film as part of Trex's Plastic Film Recycling Program.

Last year, about 675 schools collected 170,135 pounds of plastic film, the equivalent of 12,760,146 grocery bags. It’s not too late to participate in this year’s challenge. For more information, visit

Recycling efforts are important to Trex. Our wood-composite decking is made from 95% recycled wood scraps and plastic film. Thanks in part to Americans dedicated to recycling, Trex is able to keep 600,000 tons of polyethylene and wood scrap out of landfills each year.

Just this year, Trex took the top honor in Green Builder Media’s 2014 Reader’s Choice awards, with more than 38 percent of readers selecting Trex as the “greenest in the industry.” We’re honored that so many people associate Trex with eco-friendly, sustainable building products. Look no further than the actual numbers:

600 million – Pounds of recycled plastic and wood scrap salvaged by Trex annually
300 million – Pounds of sawdust recycled by Trex each year
140,000 – The number of recycled plastic bags used in the making of an average 500-square foot Trex deck
240 – The number of plastic milk jugs and laundry detergent bottles used in the manufacture of one Adirondack chair from the Trex Outdoor Furniture collection, which is made of 90 percent recycled content
25 – The minimum percentage of recycled steel in Trex Elevations Steel Deck Framing system, which also is a 100 percent renewable resource

We encourage you to look for an America Recycles Day event in your community tomorrow or do your own part to raise awareness and commitment by recycling your own household waste. That plastic film you’re throwing away could instead be used to make one of our beautiful Trex decks!
