Love this year's HGTV® Dream Home outdoor spaces? Us too! Here, we break down the design of this stunning space and share some expert tips on how you can recreate this design in your own backyard.
All great designs start with inspiration. Brian Patrick Flynn, designer of HGTV® Dream Home 2023 shared with us his mindset, intentions, and inspiration for this space.
"A lot of the design choices were informed by the lifestyle that comes with Colorado. It's very active, and there are hiking trails just a few hundred feet from the house. So it's important that the house fits people who will really take advantage of the surroundings. I also wanted the house to be a great fit for pet owners as almost everyone you see in the neighbourhood is out walking their dogs at different times of the day" shares Brian.
The liveable, low-maintenance outdoor living space featured on this year's HGTV® Dream Home reflects Flynn's visions from his colour selections to layout.
Pro Tip: When designing your outdoor space, think about how you want to use the space. Does it need to be pet-friendly? What type of activities do you plan to use the space for? How long do you want to stay in this home? All of these questions should inform your deck design.
The outdoor living space at the HGTV® Dream Home 2023 features an array of products from the Trex Outdoor Living Collection. Known for its legacy of innovation and sustainable approach to outdoor living, the Trex collection is an ideal fit for this Colorado-inspired home.
Setting the tone for the outdoor space is Trex Transcend® Lineage™ decking in the light coastal brown shade of Biscayne. Launched in 2022, the Lineage line features a selection of contemporary, subtle hues designed to bring a touch of sophistication to any living space. In addition to the luxurious look, this newest offering to the composite decking industry is engineered to keep your deck cooler, even on the hottest days*, making it the perfect choice for this pet-friendly deck.
Pro Tip: If you live in a warmer climate, try using a heat-mitigating decking like Lineage for a deck that is cooler under the sun.*
I think the Lineage decking is exactly what the back of the house needed. Something low maintenance and hard working so the space can just be enjoyed carefree any month of the year. And, I love the colouring of it with its grey tones against the sage green of the home's exterior.
Not only was this modern shade used for the decking, the boards were also used vertically to create a visually stunning cladding wall and wrapped the entire deck in the matching fascia for a seamless look.
Pro Tip: If the sides of your deck are visible from your yard, explore some fascia options to give your deck a polished look.
Accenting this mangrove-inspired deck is aluminium rails in Charcoal Black. Signature® Rod Rail from the Trex collection brings the industrial look of a cable rail without the ongoing maintenance. Adorned with built-in lighting, this railing look invites family and friends to linger long after the sun sets behind the mountains.
Pro Tip: If your deck has a stunning natural view like the HGTV® Dream Home 2023, try using a black or glass railing to let your view be the star of your outdoor space.
In the distance, one can see a rich, red pergola perched at the perfect vantage point to take in the breathtaking views. Featuring a modern shade panel, this Trex® Pergola™ offers architectural interest with the perfect amount of shade and privacy.
Pro Tip: If you have the space, explore creating multiple "rooms" for your outdoor space to add intimacy and purpose to each zone of your backyard.
To take this bonus space to the next level, Flynn opted to add the same recessed lighting and decking used on the main deck.
Pro Tip: Incorporate lighting into your decking and railing to add ambience and safety to each space without unsightly cords.
Connecting the two outdoor living zones is a simple walkway made with decking and railing from the Trex collection. Both products are designed to stand up to the outdoor elements and heavy foot traffic.
Pro Tip: Do some research before selecting the materials for your outdoor space to ensure your selections are built to outlast in the elements.
We know taking on a decking project comes with many decisions, especially when the HGTV® Dream Home 2023 is your inspiration. That's why here at Trex, we have a variety of online tools, planning advice, and product samples to take the guesswork out of the process.

*Although Trex Transcend Lineage is designed to be cooler than most other composite decking products of a similar colour, on a hot sunny day, it will get hot. On hot days, care should be taken to avoid extended contact between exposed skin and the deck surface, especially with young children and those with special needs.
